Anthony Haden-Guest:
FUN TIMES
Curated by Kuzma Vostrikov
Online Exhibition
May 28 – July 15, 2020
A cartoon can express a thought, channel a feeling, embody a fantasy, whatever, but it must do so efficiently and understandably or the humor dies.
Orange Art Foundation is pleased to present "Fun Times", an online solo exhibition of recent Cartoons by Anthony Haden-Guest. On view digitally now through Wednesday, July 1st, 2020, the writer, reporter, and New York icon showcases his trademark sardonic wit through his groundbreaking cartoon work, darkly humorous and contemplative vignettes on art, politics, celebrity, and modern life. The exhibition features works from Haden-Guest's latest published collection of cartoons, "Fun Times: Further Chronicles of Now" now available in hardcover online.
Cartoonery is becoming an extremely timely practice and for two reasons, both tech-based. The first is that the world is demonstrably more and more dominated by images. The power of the still photograph, though so formidable in the hands of the Magnum photographers and the studio greats, has been depleted by screens and smartphones. And the second? The art world, like every segment of the economy, is facing the impact of AI and robotics, but with specific unease, as algorithms grow increasingly capable of replicating just about any art style.
But AI doesn’t do humor. Robots can’t get jokes!
Anthony Haden-Guest’s cunning cartoons seethe in a mashup of audacious hilarity, and sublime social commentary amidst the dangers of masked manners, the undoing of civilization and its self-absorption. They infiltrate, disrupt, subvert the chatty miscalculations, the prescribed power in words, the casual conversation unleashed to hell-bent mercy and LOL.
